Open all hours

Sunday, March 23rd, 2008

Trying to buy a Wifi connection card last night (or this morning, to be precise) I got a message from Telefonica’s online shop: “Store open between 12:00 and 07:00″! What, the shopkeeper needs some downtime? I’ll refrain from saying “bloody typical”. Oops, just did…

Hmmm… latency…

Question Box: one-key, no-screen internet

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

This is an interesting idea, that seems slightly mad at first, then starts to make perfect sense once you think about it. Then it seems really obvious. Then it makes me think about that fact that I already provide this service to family members! Cool.

IE8 wants to be free

Tuesday, March 4th, 2008

Fairly surprisingly (no, really bloody amazingly) the IE team has decided to make IE8 “interpret web content in the most standards compliant way it can“. This is a welcome change (although we’re still having to make things work for IE6, of course!) What’s interesting about it is the willingness to put themselves on the side of [...]

Starting as I mean to go on.

Tuesday, January 1st, 2008

Uh-oh, a few hours into 2008 and I’m searching for wifi access points in Manchester. I’m not sure if that’s a good omen or a bad one. Anyway, Happy New Year and if you’re a client, as you can see I’m just as connected as usual. (And BTOpenzone… steep! Need to get sorted for Fon ASAP, although [...]

More CSS work.

Wednesday, September 12th, 2007

I’ve been doing a lot more HTML/CSS recently than backend stuff, which suits me actually. Anyway, this is for Socialtext Open, the Wiki platform for which I’ve been doing a fair bit of work recently. It’s quite an extensive and varied app, so dealing with the CSS is quite an interesting challenge. The HTML is [...]

Flickr geotagging

Wednesday, August 30th, 2006

I’m loving the Flickr geotagging, but obviously the problem comes with the fact that it was Yahoo! and not Google that bought Flickr… To be honest, for absolutely anywhere I’ve taken a photo, it’s almost impossible to pinpoint it on the Yahoo! “maps”. You’ve got half a chance with the satellite imagery, but it’s all [...]

Image blocking on RSS feeds.

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

It seems a little daft to me that you’d set up your RSS feed to include images, then block image download by referer, when by definition, the referer isn’t going to be the feed’s home site.

Barcelona humour.

Wednesday, August 9th, 2006

Black humour, really. And I like black humour, but this is not that funny. I was having a quick peek at http://infojobs.net/ to see the lay of the land in the web/tech sector in Barcelona and it’s not a pretty sight: companies looking for experienced analyst/programmers and expecting to pay 900€ a month – that’s NET [...]

Dope on wax! (er, clay…)

Wednesday, February 22nd, 2006

This is quite a mad one – and yet obvious when you think about it. Pottery from thousands of years ago carries an ambient recording superimposed into the work of the artesan. A Belgian team have managed to extract the recording from a 6,500 year-old South American vase and some 1,000 year-old Latin from another [...]

Hilarious comments on MacBook Pro shots

Sunday, February 19th, 2006

The fanboy comments on this flickr set of a new MacBook <gasp> Pro <gasp> being taken out of its packaging <gasp> are just hilarious! “I wonder if they make that outer MacBook package from the same cloth as nano sleeve.” “I still store my PowerBook with that foam condom before I put it in my [...]

Wooden Clock

Friday, February 17th, 2006

This is a pretty nice piece: a wooden clock that looks just like a plain block of wood when switched off. But when you switch it on the digital numerals shine through… nice.

What’s Up?

Very nice looking interface to multiple RSS feeds from around the world. Check it out. [Flash.] via Ektopia
